درس اليوم هو استكمال لدرس ال Idioms في اللغة الإنجليزية، في الدرس السابق شرحنا ما هي ال Idioms في اللغة الإنجليزية و قمنا بعرض لأهم و أشهر ال idioms المستخدمة بشكل يومي في اللغة الإنجليزية، و سنستكمل اليوم باقي أهم وأشهر ال idioms المستخدمة في اللغة الإنجليزية.
1- (Hang in there)
معناها: أن تنتظر و تكون صبورًا، و أن لا تستسلم و تتابع، مثل:
- Our company is going through tough times, but we're hanging in there; things will surely work out.
- I know you want to quit, but hang in there, things will get better next time.
2- (Miss the boat)
معناها: أن يفقد الفرصة و تضيع عليه، مثل:
- He missed the boat when he did not apply for the job in time.
- There were tickets available for the match till last week, but you have missed the boat by waiting till today.
3- (Sit on the fence)
معناها: أن تكون حياديًا حيال أمر يجب أن تتخذ حياله قرار، مثل:
- It would be good if you stop sitting on the fence and choose whose side you are on.
- She did not know whether to say yes or no to the proposal, she was sitting on the fence.
4- (Feeling under the weather)
معناها: أن تشعر بالتعب و الإرهاق، مثل:
- He wanted to hang out with his friends for a bit, but since he was under the weather, he went home.
- She has just returned from her vacation, but is feeling under the weather and has a sore throat and running nose.
5- (Go the extra mile)
معناها: أن تبذل جهدًا إضافيًا، أن تقوم بجهد غير متوقع لتحقيق هدف معين، مثل:
- I love staying at that hotel. They go the extra mile to make their guests happy.
- I was impressed with the way the customer service officer went the extra mile to resolve my problem.
6- (A dime a dozen)
معناها: أن الشئ شائع و متوافر بكثرة، و يمكن الحصول عليه بسهولة، مثل:
- Cheap watches like this have flooded the market. You can get them a dime a dozen.
- Coaching classes are a dime a dozen, but most of them are of low quality and do not deliver on their promise. The really good ones are far fewer.
7- (Straight from the horse's mouth)
معناها: مباشرةً من المصدر أو من مصدر موثوق و معتمد، مثل:
- What you heard is true. I know since I heard it straight from the horse's mouth.
- You need not believe me. Go talk to him and hear it straight from the horse's mouth
8- (In a nutshell)
معناها: باختصار وببساطة، و تستخدم لتلخيص ما سيقال، مثل:
- In a nutshell, Mary only wants everyone to be happy and she is willing to do whatever it takes to this achieve
- In a nutshell, all the new mayor was saying is that the fight against crime will be taken much more seriously.
9- (Cat got your tongue?)
معناها: أن الشخص لا يتحدث ، و تستخدم للإشارة لشخص ليس لديه ما يقوله أو ما يدافع به عن نفسه، مثل:
- Sarah grew quiet during the heated argument that I was forced to ask her "Cat got your tongue?
- The shy boy was afraid to speak up and his mates kept asking him "Cat got your tongue?"
10- (A blessing in disguise)
معناها: أن هناك موقف أو حدث سئ و لكن اتضح أن له مزايا غير متوقعة، مثل:
- Missing the train was a blessing in disguise, for we would have been on it when it met with an accident, killing many of its passengers.
- Failing in his exams was a blessing in disguise, for he realized that he was not enjoying his course and decided to try out something else.
